Theme IV: Overview (6wk)

Theme IV, “CATCH Me If You Can: Family Matters,” focuses on building a strong bridge between campus efforts to cultivate healthy behaviors and home efforts to reinforce and sustain them. Parental involvement is important in creating greater health awareness and promoting healthier choices by their children, just as it is for their academic performance.

Engaging Parents as Role Models for Healthy Choices

Although it is school focused, the CATCH Program reaches out to parents as key role models for their children–to encourage them to teach their kids by example. Instead of eating unhealthy snacks and skipping breakfast, parents, for example, could switch to GO foods for snacks and eat a healthy breakfast. Instead of watching TV, they could go for a walk.

Unhealthy messages seem to surround U.S. kids. They are influenced not just by what they hear, but by what they see and do:

  • Over one-third of all U.S. adults are obese–understandable in view of the fact that only three in 10 gets the recommended amount of daily physical activity.
  • The average 11 to 18 year-old eats at a fast food restaurant at least twice a week.
