CATCH My Breath Middle School

CATCH My Breath is a program that will help your students build knowledge and skills to resist media influences and peer pressure to try E-cigarettes. It was designed to be delivered by nurses, school counselors, or teachers of health education, tobacco education, physical education, or science.

The CATCH My Breath program materials include: teacher training and materials, policy guides, parent resources, evaluation tools, signage, peer group facilitator guides, classroom lessons and a PE Supplement. If you have any questions, please email us at catchmybreath@catch.org

Selecting and training Peer Group Facilitators.

6th Grade Session 1: Consequences of E-cigaratte Use

Identify negative consequences and describe health hazards associated with E-cigarette use.

6th Grade Session 2: Making Our Own Choices

Students will discover nonsmokers as the majority, describe the harmful consequences of E-cigarette use, identify reasons why teens may begin using E-cigarettes, identify positive alternatives to using E-cigarettes, and demonstrate refusal skills.

6th Grade Session 3: Don't Let Them Lie and Win

Students will recognize situations and places that may be high risk for being offered an E-cigarette, recognize indirect and direct advertising pressure, discover the amount of money the tobacco and E-cigarette industry spends on advertising its products, analyze some of the advertising techniques tobacco and E-cigarette companies use, and develop a warning label and slogan that addresses misconceptions and promotes the benefits of being E-cigarette-free.

Students will analyze the safety of flavor chemicals, present their Warning Label Project that addresses misconceptions about E-cigarettes, and make a personal goal regarding E-cigarette use.

Students will analyze the safety of flavor chemicals, demonstarte their refusal skills and smart exit strategies, present their advertising slogan that addresses misconceptions about E-cigarettes and the benefits of being E-cigarette-free, and make a personal goal regarding E-cigarette use.
