Grade 8 Nutrition: Life in the Balance
A classroom curriculum for grade 8 that focuses on nutrition and physical activity. Topics such as energy balance, screen time, target heart rate, added sugars in foods, and breakfast are covered using hands-on activities. The activities reinforce the skills needed to select and prepare healthy meals and snacks, guide physical activity patterns, and foster an environment of family support.
The curriculum is divided into seven lessons on nutrition and/or physical activity. Each lesson consists of two 20-minute parts. However, the two parts can be taught together if a 40-minute instruction period is available.
Grade 8 Lesson 1: Water, Pure and Simple
Students will identify health benefits of drinking water and reducing consumption of sports drinks and caffeinated soft drinks.
Grade 8 Lesson 2: We Won't Get Fooled Again
Students will identify media ad techniques and create soft drink ads that reflect truth in advertising.
Grade 8 Lesson 3: Project Lesson: We Won't Get Fooled Again
Students will present soft drink and apply knowledge of ad techniques to the advertising of energy drinks and fast food.
Grade 8 Lesson 4: Breakfast: More Is Less
Students will identify nutrition information on food labels and determine how healthy certain breakfast foods are.
Grade 8 Lesson 5: Weight-Bearing Activities
Students will identify short-term health benefits and opportunities for doing physical and weight-bearing activities.
Grade 8 Lesson 6: Project Lesson: Weight-Bearing Activities
Students will create and explain a visual presentation that promotes opportunities for WBA’s.
Grade 8 Lesson 7: Power Snacking
Students will identify personal snacking habits, compare calories, and identify low-calorie snacks they can eat in specific situations.
