CATCH Program Director Peter Cribb returned to Los Fresnos, Texas this week in order to lead a booster training with the dedicated staff there.

Just a few months after Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) provided grant funding to implement CATCH in Los Fresnos’s elementary and middle schools, CATCH has already made a big impact on the schools in the Rio Grande Valley town.

CATCH Champion at Lopez-Riggins Elementary School, Julio Araiza, says that CATCH has been able to make a big difference in a short period of time. “Our school health environment has been enhanced significantly because everyone is engaged and participating.”

One of the unique ways in which the staff of Lopez-Riggins Elementary School has engaged with the CATCH curriculum is via library organization. Librarian Anita Perez has created a one-stop-shop for teachers and students by creating a section for the CATCH curriculum, books, and resources on nutrition and physical activity. Ms. Perez also teaches CATCH lessons to students once a month, in addition to their usual classroom lessons. All of this occurs with fantastic support from Lopez-Riggins Principal Claudia Larrasquitu.

Peter trained physical education teachers from all of the Los Fresnos middle and elementary schools as part of the grant from BCBSTX. He said it was thrilling to see the energized teachers swap tips on maximizing Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity in their activity in their gyms and classrooms.
