In 2014, the U.S. Surgeon General released a Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer, in which several different strategies and policy tactics were outlined to try to help our nation reduce our collective risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. Every year since the release of the Call to Action, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released an annual progress report.
The 2017 Skin Cancer Prevention Progress Report was released in July and we were excited to see the evidence-based Ray and the Sunbeatables™: A Sun Safety Curriculum featured in the report! The program was lauded for its wide adoption across the country in the two years since it was launched; the pre-K through 1st grade program is in over 1,000 communities in 23 states and one Canadian province and reaches over 100,000 kids annually.
The Sunbeatables™ Program educates children, parents and teachers about sun protection and promotes sun safety behaviors in an effort to reduce children’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Educators and caregivers can access the program in its entirety, for free, at https://sunbeatables.org
