5156.0: CATCH and the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model

Wednesday, November 14 • 12:30-2:00

CATCH Promise, an initiative of the CATCH Global Foundation (CGF), aims to eliminate cost and accessibility barriers for underserved school districts wanting to apply the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model to promote healthy behaviors and raise academic achievement. With support from CATCH Promise, Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (GCCISD) is taking a scalable approach to build a foundation for sustainability as they implement and expand the WSCC model district-wide. Located on the Texas Gulf Coast, GCCISD serves a diverse student body that is 52% Hispanic, 13% African American, and 59% economically disadvantaged. CATCH Promise supports school districts by fostering community collaboration and investment in coordinated school health (CSH). In partnership with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, CGF has provided GCCISD with curriculum materials, coordination resources, training, evaluation, and technical assistance to create healthy school, home, and community environments. To generate support and momentum for implementing the WSCC model district-wide, GCCISD has begun with implementation of an evidence-based PE program in its 21 K-8 schools and full CSH implementation in four pilot elementary schools in 2017-2018. Since 2014, CATCH Promise has helped approximately 150 K-8 schools improve the health-related behaviors of over 70,000 children. Program results have included increases in students’ daily physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption. Evaluation in GCCISD is in progress and results will be presented. CATCH Promise offers fundraising, partnership development, and implementation support, and GCCISD a replicable model, for underserved school districts interested in implementing the WSCC model.
