Schools across Texas are looking to social and emotional learning (SEL) as the key driver towards school change in the wake of the COVID – 19 pandemic. However, as schools and districts begin their implementation journey, SEL can often feel like “one more thing” or a “nice to have” rather than critical for excellence in student outcomes. Through a systems approach to implementation, schools and districts can leverage current systems such as MTSS and physical wellness models to craft a comprehensive implementation plan for SEL that feels integrated into the daily operations of a school environment. In this session, Margot Toppen will discuss her experiences and provide tangible examples of how to create a collaborative culture.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the benefits of utilizing a systems approach in implementation of SEL and whole-child wellness.
  • Participants will learn strategies for building a cross-departmental team to lead systems-level change.
  • Participants will be able to describe a comprehensive approach to addressing social, emotional, and behavioral wellness through common schoolwide practices and various levels of support.
